Today Show Appearance

There’s no reason to feel alone or ashamed! You're in GREAT company.

It’s time to come out and speak up. That’s the message of the July 27, 2009 Bald Girls Do Lunch segment on the Today Show, the nation’s top-rated network morning show.

Correspondent Amy Robach joined BGDL founder Thea Chassin and five other women with alopecia areata as they chatted, shared stories, gave advice and, of course, lunched. Just by being themselves, they helped change public perception about bald women: we are not weirdos, cancer patients, skinheads...we are normal, vibrant people who simply can’t grow hair.

When the cameras aren’t rolling, women at BGDL lunches tend to get a bit more in-depth. Many attendees have never met anyone else with alopecia areata. At this time, BGDL has a waiting list yet hopes to hold events in 10-15 more cities this year — we want to give as many women as we can this same enriching opportunity.

Why Our Program Works

Bringing women together to meet and share with "someone else like me" is a tremendous relief from what can be an isolating existence. Women who attend BGDL events learn new ways to live as fully as possible, try new approaches (like wigs, hats, scarves, or going bald) and develop a local network. As a result, they become more confident and their self-acceptance blossoms.

Life is so much better when you truly accept yourself.

"In 2005, I looked at the names of so many women I'd met with alopecia areata who were in my address book and thought, 'Ladies...we're doing lunch.' When so many people were enthusiastic, I knew I was onto something."
Thea Chassin, BGDL Founder
